What Is Street Lighting Distribution Box?

Street lighting distribution box is an essential component of modern street lighting systems. It is installed inside the lower section of the streetlight pole and serves the critical function of safely and efficiently distributing mains electricity. When municipal power cables enter from underground into the pole, the distribution box routes power upward to the luminaire while also passing power along to the next streetlight in the circuit. This ensures that each streetlight and each luminaire operates in a parallel electrical configuration.

1. Currently, there are two mainstream types of street lighting distribution boxes:

- Air-switch type
- Fuse type
 

As the names suggest, the air‑switch type uses miniature circuit breakers (MCBs), while the fuse type uses ceramic-tube fuses instead of traditional glass ones.

2. In China, Europe, and most parts of the world, mains electricity is typically available in 220V and 380V (three‑phase). In contrast, U.S. systems commonly use 120V and 277V, with 277V typically used for industrial applications.

3. Whether the streetlight receives 220V or 120V, the distribution box supplies the same voltage to the luminaire above it, and maintains the same voltage as it passes power to the next streetlight.

4. If the streetlight is powered by 380V or 277V, the distribution box still outputs 220V or 120V to the luminaire, respectively. However, the voltage passed on to the next pole remains unchanged—380V or 277V.

5. Shenzhen Greenway Electronic Co., Ltd. currently manufactures two models of street lighting distribution boxes:

- M695 — uses ceramic-tube fuses
- M696 — uses air-switch circuit breakers

6. A unique advantage of our distribution boxes is that they can house an SPD internally, which is something that most competing products on the market cannot achieve due to limited internal space.
