Surge Protective Devices (SPDs), also known as surge protectors, are essential electronic components that provide safety protection for electrical equipment, instruments, and communication lines. When sudden spike voltages or currents occur due to external interference, an SPD diverts and limits the surge, preventing damage to downstream devices.
When purchasing SPDs, customers must be extremely cautious. The market is flooded with products that offer little to no real protection. Researching the specifications of a particular model is the best approach, but paying attention to safety certifications is also a reliable way to judge product quality.
1. Price as an Indicator of Quality
In general, extremely low-priced SPDs should not be expected to provide effective protection. These products typically use cheap, low-capacity MOVs (Metal Oxide Varistors). When subjected to strong surges, they fail quickly and provide little to no actual surge protection.
On the other hand, a higher price does not automatically guarantee good quality. In the American market, for example, the best way to evaluate an SPD is to examine the electrical parameters listed on its safety certificate. ETL and UL are authoritative U.S. safety certification bodies specializing in electrical product testing. If an SPD does not carry any certification mark, it is likely a poor-quality product, or even worse — it may not contain any protection components at all! In some cases, low‑quality MOVs used in these devices can overheat, causing the entire SPD to catch fire. This is not rare — it happens often.
Of course, products with certifications are not always high‑quality, but certification provides at least a basic level of protection. If an SPD carries certifications from multiple regions (e.g., Europe, the U.S., and China), its reliability is significantly higher.

High‑quality SPDs may include performance guarantees or warranties. If you are protecting expensive equipment, consider selecting an SPD that offers such guarantees. However, keep in mind that no SPD is 100% foolproof — even the best products can fail under extreme conditions.
