An SPD Capable of Withstanding Extreme Testing
2025-11-27
Not long ago, a well-known lighting manufacturer approached Shenzhen Greenway Electronic Co., Ltd. to ask whether we could provide a 10kV surge protection device (SPD) capable of passing an extreme test required by their overseas end customer. The manufacturer had already tested samples from several SPD suppliers, including major international brands, but all had failed to pass the test.
Curious about these unusually strict test requirements, we asked for more details before starting development.
1. Understanding Mainstream International Testing Standards
In most major global certification systems, SPD surge testing involves applying surge impulses across three circuits:
- L–N
- N–E
- L–E
For each circuit, 15 surge impulses are applied, with a 60‑second interval between each impulse. Once one circuit completes its 15 surges, the test moves to the next circuit using a new sample. Therefore, completing the entire certification test requires at least three SPD samples.
2. The Customer’s “Extreme Test” Requirements
The overseas client of the lighting manufacturer had far more demanding requirements:
(1) Each of the three circuits must withstand 40 surge impulses.
(2) The surge interval must remain 60 seconds.
(3) No sample replacement is allowed during the entire test.
This means one single SPD sample must survive a total of 120 surge impulses.
This is not just an extreme test — it is a hell-level endurance test. It became clear why even major SPD brands could not pass it.
3. Why the End Customer Required This Level of Testing
The exact reason remains unknown. However, their requirement was absolute and non-negotiable. They needed an SPD that could endure the most demanding conditions imaginable — without structural, thermal, or electrical failure.
4. Greenway’s Engineering Response
Committed to meeting customer needs, our R&D team conducted in-depth analysis and redesigned the internal circuit architecture of the SPD. After several stages of optimization and verification, the newly engineered SPD successfully passed the full 120-impulse extreme test in a single attempt, with performance fully meeting the customer’s requirements.
5. Certifications and Reliability Assurance
Shenzhen Greenway Electronic Co., Ltd. is a leading manufacturer of safety-focused surge protection devices. All our SPD products have obtained one or more major international certifications, including:
- ETL (North America)
- TÜV / CE (Europe)
- UKCA (United Kingdom)
- CQC (China)
We provide high-performance SPDs for lighting manufacturers worldwide and offer customized surge-protection solutions tailored to specific application needs.
Conclusion
Our success in meeting this “hell-level” surge test demonstrates Greenway’s technical capability and commitment to quality. We will continue developing advanced, reliable, and globally certified SPD solutions to support our customers in achieving higher standards of safety and performance.
